3rd-5th GRADE CLASSES 2010-2011
Third grade students rotate through 5 classes each day. These classes are:
Art (Bethany Allison) - This year we will by study art through ancient civilizations. The students will learn about a culture and its art and complete a project in the medium of the time. Civilizations to be studied this fall include, pre-historic art, Minoan Art, Egyptian art and Chinese art.
(supplies needed: $7 art fee, notebook or folder with loose leaf paper for taking notes, pen or pencil each week)
History (Michelle Younkman) - We will travel through and explore the history and geography of the 50 states.
(supplies: $13 copy/periodical fee, notebook with notebook paper, colored pencils, 8.5x11 size world map)
Science (Patti Lyle) - This year students will learn about Weather in the fall semester and Insects in the spring semester. This science class will be very interactive. We will have 3 quizzes and a test each semester.
(supplies: $7 supply fee to be paid at Parent Meeting; three-ring view binder-1 ½ inch (stays with teacher during semester), 50 sheets of lined paper to put in binder, set of 5 dividers for notebook, pencils)
Sign Language (Pamela Taylor) - Students will learn ways to communicate with persons who are deaf, including the manual alphabet and American Sign Language. The class will learn to sign various songs throughout the year and learn signs to allow them to have conversations with deaf individuals. Discussions will also help students see what life is like for people who are deaf and how they cope with everyday situations.

Writing (Kathy Lee) - 3rd-4th Grade: This year in Creative Writing, third and fourth graders will continue study grammar, sentence structure and paragraph writing using the book Wordsmith Apprentice from Common Sense Press.
"An easy to use writing course encouraging students to develop their writing skills as they participate in every role on a newspaper staff: editor, reporter, writer, etc. Children develop a love for writing as they express themselves through sentence and paragraph writing, persuasive writing, and much more." 5th Grade: The fifth graders will be diving into the area of editing using the book, The Great Editing Adventure Series Book I, also from Common Sense Press. "Students learn and review grammar as they search for the errors in these exciting stories. Volume I contains three separate stories with a total of 90 lessons. Editing exercises teach and review grammar, writing mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, finding synonyms with a thesaurus, and dictionary use. Written by the creators of Learning Language Arts Through Literature."

Report Report cards will be given for each semester for grades 3-5. Students will be given two grades, on for class participation and one for conduct (E=Excellent, G=Good, S=Satisfactoy, U=Unsatisfactory).
